4 Mansfield police officers on leave after shooting incident; one person in hospital

The officers responded to a report of someone attempting to harm themselves.

MANSFIELD - Four Mansfield police officers have been placed on administrative leave following an officer-involved shooting Sunday on Mulberry Street.

The person injured in the incident was taken to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital, according to a press release issued by Mansfield Police Chief Kenneth Coontz.

At 6:49 p.m. Sunday, Mansfield police received a "frantic" call from 187 S. Mulberry St., according to the press release. "The caller stated that there was an intoxicated person slitting their wrist."

The caller said the person had a knife was attempting suicide.

Officers arrived at the scene and confronted the suspect. A Taser had no effect.

"During the confrontation, the suspect was shot," according to the release. Officers provided medical first aid, and the suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment.

"BCI (the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation) and I will be conducting the investigation into the shooting," Coontz said. "The officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave per department policy."

The officers at the scene were identified in the release as D. Johnson, C. Hamilton, M. Boggs and C. Shepherd.
