Amber Alert cancelled after 4-year-old Sandusky boy found safe, mother in custody

The boy and his mother were tracked down near Cincinnati as they were bound for Florida.

There was relief on Friday night after an Amber Alert for a missing boy. Police found 4 year old D'Quai Hemchak -- and arrested his mother.

All amber alerts are scary, but this one had police and family worried the child was truly in danger, because this did not go down without a fight.

"The amber alert works."

That was the relief shared by Dante Adcock the boy’s uncle. But earlier it was a horror show for any child.

A 4-year-old in the middle of a bitter custody battle. D’Quai Hemchak, a mere 30 pounds and only three feet tall, was pulled from a car by his mom Jennifer Hemchak.

"I guess she had been here for a couple of hours and was just following them around, and waited for the right time to pull him out of the car," said D’Quai’s uncle.

It happened right outside his home here on Prospect Street in Sandusky, just before 5:00 p.m.

D’Quai's uncle tells us Hemchak then threw the boy into her car, a 2015 White Hyundai Sonata. She was trying to make the approximately thousand mile trip from Ohio...all the way to Florida where she lived.

"For some reason she’s in trouble with the law here, so she lived down there," Dante told us.

He says Hemchak moved down there three years ago, and got in trouble there, so his sister-in-law took custody of the child.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office sent out an Amber Alert asking people to look for the car.

Within three hours Dante says someone spotted it in Cincinnati, where Hemchak was arrested.

"Everybody’s ok. He should be coming back here tomorrow night…tomorrow morning," he said.

Dante tells us police are bringing him back to Sandusky, where he'll be reunited with the family.
