A 25-year-old Virginia man who died after falling off a balcony at Kalahari Resort and Convention Center has been identified.

The Erie County Coroner told WKYC the Virginia man, now identified as Derek Vancleave, has a history of traumatic brain injury which previously caused him to have erratic movements.

Vancleave passed away at  Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky.

Kalahari issued a statement early this afternoon regarding the incident:

"We are deeply saddened by this morning’s events. We are fully cooperating with the local authorities for anything they may need. As this incident resulted from a personal and private matter in a guest room, we will not be commenting further. Our thoughts and prayers are those affected."

According to the Erie County Sheriff's office incident report, his parents James and Leslie Vancleave said Derek had been struck by a truck when he was only 14. The father told deputies that Derek sustained massive head trauma as a result, and has since required full-time care.

The incident report also said the parents advised that, as a result of his previous injuries, Derek makes poor choices and is very impulsive and has a tendency to overreact to certain environmental stimuli like sounds and smells. The incident report says that the father felt  "...it was possible Derek had gone out on the balcony to escape the smell of food his brother had burned in the microwave."
