Ohio Senate introduces bill abolishing personal income tax in 10 years

If passed and signed into law, Senate Bill 327 would make Ohio the 10th state without income tax.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — State Sen. Stephen Huffman (R-Tipp City) introduced SB327 in the Ohio Senate on Tuesday, which if passed would abolish personal income tax in 10 years.

Nine states, including Florida and Texas, have already eliminated state income tax.

Huffman says every Ohioan would benefit if the bill were to pass.

"I see the businesses, I see the workers and I see the government bringing more economic development for all three of them," says Huffman.

While Huffman believes everyone in Ohio would benefit from SB327, others think it would only benefit certain classes.

"I think the wealthiest Ohioans would win the most and benefit the most," says State Sen. Nickie Antonio (D-Lakewood). "The lowest income folks in this state would end up paying more in the long run."

Antonio says SB327 is not what Ohio needs.

"It just doesn't seem to me like a way towards prosperity for the state to look at cutting income tax as a way forward," says Antonio.

Huffman told 3News that the income tax in Ohio has been reduced since 2010, however the funding is still the same.

"In 2010, our the state of Ohio personal income tax brought the state about $8.2 billion, since then we've reduced the tax by a third and we still bring in $8.2 billion," says Huffman.

Huffman adds that SB327 is about educating members of the general assembly and continuing the conversation about how this benefits all Ohioans.
