EDINBURG TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- I-76 was closed in both directions for several hours Wednesday night into Thursday morning after a FedEx vehicle hauling ammunition and inactive grenades caught fire.
It happened at 10:26 p.m. near milepost 45 in Portage County.
Officers located the FedEx vehicle pulling a double cargo box trailer stopped on an entrance ramp with a small brake fire on the rear trailer. They used fire extinguishers to douse the flames with no subsequent damage.
The driver, a 64-year-old Youngstown man, was able to separate the commercial truck and first trailer and move it into the nearby rest area.
"An examination of the billing papers revealed the trailer contained sodium hydroxide, a barrel of unidentified ammunition and a 60 lb. container of inert training grenades," authorities say in a press release.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Ravenna Fire Department, Summit County Bomb Squad, Portage County EMA and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
All lanes of I-76 have since reopened.
