The two children -- 22 months old and 23 months old -- were from the Wellington area, according to the Lorain County Sheriff.
Just before 10:30 a.m. today, deputies were sent to an address on West Road in Pittsfield Township, south of SR 303, in response to a reported drowning.
Deputies met with first responders from the Wellington Fire Department and discovered that a 22-month-old girl and a 23-month-old boy were in the care of a home-operated day care operation and were discovered by a resident there to be partially submerged in an above-ground pool, according to the sheriff's department.
The children were taken to Oberlin Mercy Allen Hospital where the girl was later pronounced dead. The boy was taken by LifFlight to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland in critical condition.
The boy and the girl were cousins and both from the Wellington area, according to the sheriff.
The sheriff's department says it is unknown at this time how long the children were in the water. There was a gate and fence surrounding the deck to the pool, however, it has not yet been determined if the gate was properly secured.
The sheriff says the investigation is on-going and no criminal charges have been filed.
