Stark County teens preparing to perform in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Jacob Lyon and Brock Hrynko are now two of 185 band members marching in the Big Apple.

NAVARRE, Ohio — Fairless High School seniors Jacob Lyon and Brock Hrynko are getting ready for the performance of a lifetime in the Macy's Great American Marching Band.

It’s something they never even knew was a possibility until their band director challenged her students to apply last year.

"Brock and I compete sometimes, we like to push each other in class and in band and we looked at each other like yeah, we'll do this,” Jacob said. “We'll at least apply."

And for director Elizabeth Barkan, there was some incentive as well.

“My birthday is actually on Thanksgiving this year, so I was like, ‘You have to get me to New York. I mean just kidding, but we should try and go.’”

After a written and musical application, Brock and Jacob are now two of 185 band members marching in the Big Apple, which is something many missed out on last year.

It will be a busy week with daily rehearsals and a 1:30 a.m. call time on Thanksgiving, but the excitement alone might just wake them up.

The boys made it to New York over the weekend. A GoFundMe to help them with the trip expenses has reached nearly $4,000.
