Local comic book collection features first appearance of Black Panther

The collection has been tucked away for more than a half of a century.

“It’s like Christmas Day all over again.”

Dan Hare is celebrating his 27th anniversary after opening his store, The Toys Time Forgot in Canal Fulton, in 1991.

“Anything you can remember from your childhood, we have it. If we don’t, we’ll find it.”

Thousands of items, from superhero figurines to a rare lunch box worth more than $5,000, lines nearly every inch of the store.

It’s newest addition: A rare comic book collection from the 1960s, featuring the first appearances of Marvel and DC icons.

The collection has been tucked away for more than a half of a century.

“We’re calling it the Jimmy Scott Collection,” said Manager Jami Meeker. “He didn’t hold onto it very long because in 1966 he was killed in a motorcycle accident.”

The collection, sold at an undisclosed amount, was kept by Scott in grocery store boxes that was taken during his time employed at a Kroger grocery store.

“When you open it up on the inside, you can still see the colors are still bright,” Meeker said.

There are several key pieces in the collection, including Fantastic Four Issue 52, which features the first appearance of Black Panther.

Black Panther’s arrival on the big screen has gained a lot of attention and money at the box office.

In comic book form:

“It’s more than a $1,000 book.”

A quick search online shows past sales between $80,000 - $90,000 dollars for a near mint grade of 9.8 on a scale of 10. Jimmy Scott’s collection is graded around an average of about 7.5.

Each comic book will be sold individually and available for sale beginning on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Hare said they're expecting an a good turnout with customers traveling from outside state lines, including Maryland.

No word on the potential value that the entire collection holds, but for some, it’s about holding a piece of history.

“They’re going to find a thousand new homes,”

Each book that’s sold will have their own certificate honoring Jimmy Scott who started the collection before he passed away.
