ELECTION PREVIEW | 3News Senior Political Consultant Tom Beres talks President Trump vs. Joe Biden and more with Dave DeNatale

How important is Ohio to the presidential election and how soon might we know who won? Tom Beres answers those questions and more.

CLEVELAND — As we all get set to see who will be elected as the next President of the United States, I had a chance to talk to our Senior Political Consultant Tom Beres to get his thoughts on where things stand heading into Tuesday.

There are so many layers to this year's presidential election. First and foremost, we're not exactly sure when we will know who the winner is. Because of absentee ballots and mail-in voting, some states may not have results that can be called for hours, or perhaps days after the polls close.

Also, there has already been talk from President Trump about a legal fight ahead following a ruling by the Supreme Court to keep an order in place for counting absentee ballots in Pennsylvania. But several conservative justices indicated they'd be open to taking the issue up after the election, especially if those late-arriving ballots could mean the difference in the state.

“This is a horrible thing that the United States Supreme Court has done to our country," Trump said in Pennsylvania Saturday. On Sunday, he said that as soon as the polls close, “We’re going in with our lawyers.”

All this is happening as Ohio is once again in the national spotlight. Democratic nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden was in Cleveland on Monday and both campaigns have made repeated stops in the Buckeye State during the run up to Election Day. The latest Quinnipiac Poll shows Biden with a slim lead over Trump. Is it another case of "as Ohio goes, so goes the nation?" Tom and I tackle that question.

Plus, there are some other key items for voters to decide on Election Day. From the Cleveland Metropolitian School District levy to Ohio Supreme Court justices. It's going to be an election unlike any other.

If you’re planning to vote Tuesday, the polls are open throughout Ohio from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. If you’re mailing in an absentee ballot, it must be postmarked by Monday, Nov. 2. Otherwise, you can drop it off at your local Board of Elections until the polls close at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
