MANSFIELD -- A 23-year-old suspect was in custody in the Richland County Jail late Saturday, charged with aggravated murder in the fatal shooting of a 46-year-old man around 2 a.m. Saturday at Secretz bar, 261 Bowman St.
Demetrius Alexander Lyles, 23, of 135 Sunnyslope Drive, Apt. 4, was arrested at his apartment around 8 p.m. Saturday. Mansfield police had issued a statewide felony warrant for Lyles, who has listed several addresses in Mansfield and Michigan, according to police.
The victim of the shooting, 46-year-old Lawrence Butler, was found lying on the floor inside the business, shot in the chest area, Mansfield police Sgt. Jon Ahles said.
Butler "got into an argument, and a guy pulled out a gun and shot him," Lt. John Wendling said.
Sgt. Doug Noblet said the shooter told police Butler had assaulted him about a month ago at a different bar. No police report was filed related to that incident.
"We've heard a couple of different stories. We're not sure if he (Lyles) just found (Butler) there and took revenge, or if he felt like he was somewhat threatened," Noblet said.
Butler was taken by Mansfield Fire Department rescue squad to MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A handgun was used in the shooting, and evidence was collected at the scene, according to police.
Police said early Saturday the victim's address was uncertain, and he originally was not from the Mansfield area. "He had several addresses," Wendling said.
Lyles, formerly of 186 Arthur Ave., was arrested Aug. 11 by Mansfield police on charges of fifth-degree felony possession of cocaine and a misdemeanor charge of drunkenness. Noblet said he also had a concealed weapons charge on his record.
"We don't believe the shooting was drug-related," Noblet said.
"He'll make a court appearance Monday morning," he said.
