Ohio State men's basketball coach Thad Matta is stepping down, the university announced Monday.

The search for the next coach will begin immediately, Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith said in a news conference.

Matta has compiled a 439-154 career record as a coach for Ohio State, Butler and Xavier universities. His 337 wins with the Buckeyes makes him the program's all-time winningest coach.

Matta's been plagued by health issues, including back surgery that led to issues with his right foot.

Matta led the Buckeyes for 13 seasons and reached the Final Four twice in 2007 and 2012. His Buckeyes won five Big Ten Conference championships.
