(3) Mentor (11-1) 21, (2) St. Edward (10-2) 13
These two teams have given us some classic playoff battles over the years, and Friday night was no different: Down 10-0 early, the Cardinals took a 4-point halftime lead thanks to touchdowns from Elijah McDougall and Logan Shea. After the Eagles cut it to one in the fourth quarter, a long Mentor drive ended with a Chris Edmond TD run. The defense held from there, and the Cardinals ran out the clock for their 10th straight victory.
(1) St. Ignatius (11-1) 45, (4) Euclid (9-3) 22
The Wildcats blew open a 10-0 halftime lead to dominate the Panthers for the second time this season. Five of their players scored touchdowns, including Jack Welcsh from 6 and 33 yards out. St. Ignatius will now prepare for Mentor in the D-I Regional Finals, whom they beat 41-31 back in week two.
(3) Olmsted Falls (11-1) 21, (2) Wadsworth (11-1) 20
In a back and forth game, the Grizzlies appeared to be in control after a 70-yard touchdown run by quarterback Joey Baughman. However, the extra point was blocked, and with just 3:28 left, the Bulldogs took the lead on a 2-yard run by senior Luke Lombardo. Wadsworth could not answer back, and Olmsted Falls earned a date with unbeaten conference rival Avon in next week's D-II Regional Finals.
(2) Bay (12-0) 21, (3) Padua Franciscan (9-3) 7
The Rockets kept their unbeaten season alive thanks to a gutsy performance in North Royalton. The Bruins had cut their deficit to seven late in the game, but Matt Cover's 8-yard touchdown run with just 1:33 left put the game out of reach. Bay will take on Toledo Central Catholic in the D-III Regional Finals next week.
(3) Kirtland (12-0) 34, (2) Mogadore (9-2) 28
It was a battle of two of the area's most storied small school programs: Down 12 in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats had a chance to win the game late until a long reception ended with a fumble recovered by the Hornets. Junior Jake Neibecker led the way with 149 rushing yards and a touchdown. Kirtland will face Rootstown next week in a battle of D-VI unbeatens.
