Matt Kobal, the head football coach at Vermilion High School, has died, the school district announced late Friday night. He was 38.
In a statement on Facebook, the district called Kobal "a wonderful teacher, colleague and friend." A memorial gathering in his honor was held at the high school Saturday morning.
Kobal was tabbed as head coach of the Sailors this season, taking a team that went just 2-8 in 2016 to a respectable 5-5 record.
The exact cause of Kobal's death is not known at this time. The district said crisis counselors will be made available to students on Monday.
