Melvin Upton Jr. home run lifts Cleveland Indians to 4-2 split-squad victory over Seattle Mariners

For the second straight day, the Indians earned a win in Goodyear.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Cleveland Indians topped the Seattle Mariners in split-squad action on Wednesday, with a Melvin Upton Jr. 3-run home run lifting the Tribe to a 4-2 victory.

What follows is a running recap of the victory, in which Mike Clevinger pitched two full innings for Cleveland.

End of Game: Indians 4, Mariners 2

Tuffy Gosewisch knocks in a 2-out home run, but it's too little, too late for the Mariners as Ramirez closes out the game, striking out Junior Lake.

End of 8: Indians 4, Mariners 1

Drew Maggi reaches on an infield error, but the Indians fail to tack on any insurance runs. Neil Ramirez in to try to close out the game for Cleveland.

Middle of 8: Indians 4, Mariners 1

Carlos Torres now on the mound. Mariners load the bases but fail to knock anybody in, with a Chuck Taylor line out bringing the inning to an end.

End of 7: Indians 4, Mariners 1

Conner Capel reaches on a ground ball, but remains on base as the Indians' lead stays at three.

Middle 7: Indians 4, Mariners 1

Dan Otero now on the mound and gets out of the inning unscathed, despite allowing a runner on base by way of error.

Indians take on another run when a Jack Murphy single knocks in Rob Refsnyder.

Middle of 6: Indians 3, Mariners 1

Cameron Perkins singles, but is then picked off, for an otherwise perfect inning for the Tribe.

After a Jose Ramirez walk starts the inning, a Melvin Upton Jr. 2-run home run breaks the tie.

Middle of 5: Mariners 1, Indians 1

Shawn Morimando now on the mound for the Tribe. Allows a hit to start the inning, but goes 3 up, 3 down after that.

End of 4: Mariners 1, Indians 1

Eric Stamets draws a walk, but the Indians can't knock him in as a Lonnie Chisenhall strike out ends the inning.

Middle of 4: Mariners 1, Indians 1

Another 4-batter inning for McCallister, who keeps the game tied.

Roberto Perez doubles, but the Indians still can't get anything else going

Zach McCalister now on the mound for the Tribe and puts together a solid inning, allowing just one hit in four appearances.

End of 2: Mariners 1, Indians 1

Brandon Barnes hits a triple of his own, knocking in Gio Urshella to tie the game.

Middle of 2: Mariners 1, Indians 0

Clevinger allows two hits -- a single to start the inning and later a triple to Taylor Motter -- as the Mariners take a 1-0 lead. Clevinger likely now done for the day with 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER and no SO or BBs.

End of 1: Indians 0, Mariners 0

Jose Ramirez grabs a two-base hit and Roberto Perez draws a walk, but Richie Shaffer leaves both players on when he strikes out looking for the third out.

Middle of the 1st: Indians 0, Mariners 0

Mike Clevinger towing the rubber for the Tribe today and gets off to a strong start, going three up, three down, closing the inning on a long Cameron Perkins flyout to Melvin Upton Jr.
