Cleveland Cavaliers land 5th pick in 2020 NBA Draft

The Cavs also selected fifth during last year's draft.

CLEVELAND — Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that professional sports -basketball at least- are back.

After being delayed three months, the 2020 NBA Draft Lottery took place Thursday night. During the event, the Cavaliers obtained the fifth pick in the draft.

The Minnesota Timberwolves will select first, followed by the Golden State Warriors. The Charlotte Hornets will pick third and the Chicago Bulls will select fourth.

This is only the Cavs' second time with the fifth pick since the lottery format was introduced in 1985. The first time was last year, 2019, with the selection of Darius Garland. The Vanderbilt product has "a great handle and smooth three-point shot to go along with great court vision," according to the team's website.

Despite the lower pick, the Cavaliers appear to be confident they can still select a valuable player.

"We are excited about the depth of this year’s draft class," General Manager Koby Altman said. "We are confident that this draft position will allow us to acquire talent that will complement our core mix of young players and established veterans."

The organization took to twitter sharing a list of current and former NBA stars that were selected with the fifth pick. Along with current Cavs stars Kevin Love and Garland, the list includes Hall of Fame caliber selections Dwyane Wade, Kevin Garnett,Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen, Ray Allen.
