Earlier this week, Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd took note of Baker Mayfield wearing his hat backwards during a Zoom call with reporters ahead of the Cleveland Browns' matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC wild card round.
"Interesting. Wearing his hat backwards," Cowherd said. "What happened to [Philadelphia Eagles quarterback] Carson Wentz's season when he went to the podium with his hat on backwards. Oh. You're bad. The season unraveled."
So after the Browns beat the Steelers 48-37 in a game that Cowherd predicted to be a "tire fire" of a Pittsburgh victory, you knew what was coming next.
Joining the Browns' postgame Zoom call following the first victory of his NFL career on Sunday, Mayfield wore his hat forwards. But after being asked the first question of his press conference, the No. 1 pick of the 2018 NFL Draft made a point to turn his hat around in an obvious nod to Cowherd's criticism.
"Hold on one quick second," Mayfield said as he turned his hat around before answering a question.
Mayfield's headwear adjustment marked the Browns' second troll of Cowherd -- who had been one of the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner's most notorious critics dating back to the 2018 NFL Draft -- in as many weeks. With the game on the line in Cleveland's postseason clinching victory over the Steelers' in Week 17, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski called a play named "Maserati" -- an apparent nod to one of Cowherd's criticisms.
"When you're a No. 1 pick, I want you to be a Maserati, not a Mazda," Cowherd said of Mayfield during a segment in August 2018. "Baker's a Mazda in the NFL. He looked overwhelmed, physically. He doesn't have a great arm."
With the Browns headed to the AFC divisional round, where they'll face the Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday, it'd be tough to argue which of Cowherd's criticisms has aged worse.
