Cleveland Browns 2020 training camp: Day 7 rundown

The Browns welcomed running back Nick Chubb back to practice as he was taken off of concussion protocol.

BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns returned to the practice field in Berea on Saturday after getting a much-needed day off.

There was some good news on the injury front as we take a look at the day's top training camp headlines.

WELCOME BACK NICK

Running back Nick Chubb is off of the concussion protocol list and was back working out with the team on Saturday. “With injuries with all of our guys, we want it to be as quick as possible for them for their health, and obviously, Nick being no different. Followed all the protocols, he is feeling good and excited to have him back out there," said head coach Kevin Stefanski.

Chubb sustained the concusson on Monday after a high hit around the neck by linebacker Mack Wilson.

MORE WORK FOR MYLES

After getting some individual drill work in on Thursday, the Browns gave Myles Garrett his first reps in team action during Saturday's practice. The defensive end missed the first week of training camp due to a hamstring injury.

How did he tweak the injury before camp started?

“Running. Just running," Garrett told reporters via Zoom before Saturday's practice. "The first strain I have had. It was out of the blue. I kind of knew when I did it because I had never felt anything like it. It felt uncomfortable. I got over it pretty quick, and I am hoping to get in on what the guys are doing on the defensive side.”

Garrett is excited to team with a hopefully-healthier Olivier Vernon this fall to provide matchup problems for opponents on both sides of the defensive line. “[Vernon] is a problem on the end, whether it is setting the edge, making plays on the run and allowing it to cut back into our guys in the middle or if it being on the edge, getting to the quarterback, providing pressure, sacks and making the force the ball out earlier. That is invaluable. A guy who can do both and do it consistently, he is someone we count on, and we just play off of each other. Let him know that I have his back and what he is doing. If I am right next him, if I am playing the 3 or I am outside, if I rush the edge high and he is rushing low or whatever it is, allow ourselves to give each other the best chance to make the play and make a difference in the game," Garrett said.

INJURY RUNDOWN

The Browns say the following players missed Saturday's practice: WR KhaDarel Hodge (personal), CB Kevin Johnson (liver), DE Robert McCray (eye), TE David Njoku (wrist), DT Larry Ogunjobi (groin), WR Damion Ratley (groin). C JC Tretter (knee) and LB Mack Wilson (knee).

C Casey Dunn (foot) and WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (heat) left practice early.

RAVENS ON THE HORIZON

The Browns are going to be matched up against division rival Baltimore to start the 2020 season. The Ravens have been dealing with some issues involving safety Earl Thomas, who was sent home from practice Friday after a heated argument with teammate Chuck Clark.

"Tempers are going to flare, sure. It happens every training camp, especially right about now, probably," Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said of the incident. "But I don't like them when they extend like that and eat into our reps. We're going to have to find out why and make sure that doesn't happen. We need to keep our eye on the prize, which is preparing for the Browns."

Stefanski says the Browns are of a similar mindset. "Right when the schedule comes out, you really talk about that Week 1 opponent. We are very aware of how many days that game is away. As much as we are teaching, learning and putting in systems, of course, we are going to start ramping this thing up and get ready for Baltimore on September 13.”
