Cleveland Browns GM John Dorsey wants to draft quarterback with proven track record of winning

Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey wants to draft a quarterback with a proven track record of winning.

CLEVELAND -- Above all else, Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey wants to select players who can win in the 2018 NFL Draft.

A week before the 2018 NFL Draft, Dorsey spoke with the media and outlined what makes up the ideal quarterback prospect, and having a winning pedigree is at the top of the list.

“The only thing I care about is ‘Do the guys win?’” Dorsey said. “Does he have accuracy? Does he have a strong arm? Can he throw the ball in the red zone in tight windows? Can he drive the ball? At the end of the game, does he win? That’s kind of what I look for.”

Quarterbacks Sam Darnold (USC) and Josh Allen (Wyoming) have been the two names most linked to the Browns with the No. 1 overall pick, but both come with question marks.

In three years at Wyoming, the 6-foot-5, 233-pound Allen completed only 335 of his 649 attempts (51.67 percent) for 5,066 yards and 44 touchdowns against 21 interceptions, and his touchdown-to-interception ratio was just over two-to-one.

In two years as a starter at the University of Southern California, Darnold completed 549 of his 846 attempts (64.9 percent) for 7,229 yards and 57 touchdowns against 22 interceptions. Additionally, Darnold fumbled 21 times in just 27 games as a starter. Darnold lost 14 of those fumbles.

In a 24-7 loss to Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl Classic, Darnold fumbled twice, both of which were recovered by the Buckeyes, and threw an interception that was returned by defender Damon Webb 23 yards for a touchdown.

“You have to have an open mind in this process, and I think you have to listen to all of the information that’s filtered to you, but you also have to watch them play the game and who is best to impact,” Dorsey said in his pre-draft press conference at team headquarters Thursday.

“That’s how I look at games. How do they best impact? How do they play the game of football? Then, are they good people? Do they love the game of football? Will their teammates like them? That’s how I look at things.”

Citing hand size as one of the most important physical characteristics a quarterback can have, especially given the questionable weather conditions playing next to Lake Erie in Cleveland in November and December, Dorsey is committed to finding the quarterback who best fit the scheme the Browns are trying to run.

“Because we are human beings and you have to be able to take the physical skill sets and the emotional, mental skill sets that actually make the body move on the field and how does he react to adverse situations?” Dorsey said. “I think it’s a combination of how guys move on the field, but then, do they have the physical skill sets to do those things needed to be highly successful in the National Football League?

“You have to understand the offensive package the Cleveland Browns are trying to get, and then, you have to see if he can fit into those packages. Then, does he have a certain physical skill set that you know will help this franchise succeed moving forward. That’s kind of what I look for.”
