Hue Jackson: Cleveland Browns all about winning under GM John Dorsey

Coach Hue Jackson says the Cleveland Browns are all about winning under new GM John Dorsey.

CLEVELAND -- New Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey made no bones about what he thought of the job done by former executive vice president of football operations, Sashi Brown, who was dismissed by the organization on December 7.

After one week on the job, Dorsey ripped the former front office leader, saying in an interview with “The Really Big Show” on ESPN AM 850/WKNR Thursday that “the guys who were here before, that system, they didn’t get real players.”

Following Thursday’s practice, Browns coach Hue Jackson was asked for his thoughts on Dorsey’s comments.

“I’m not going to really get into those particular things,” Jackson said. “John Dorsey has been outstanding. He is football, 24/7. I have enjoyed getting to know him more and spending time with him and talking about our football team and what we need to do.

“Obviously, there are some good players in our locker room. The guys work extremely hard.”

Dorsey took the lead personnel job of a franchise that is in the middle of the most difficult stretch in NFL history.

The Browns’ winless streak now stands at 355 days, and they have not won on a Sunday afternoon since December 13, 2015. The 30 straight Sunday losses are an NFL record, and their 4-46 mark in the last 50 outings is the worst in the league in that four-year span.

Additionally, prior to last Sunday’s overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers, the Browns’ 1-27 mark since the start of the 2016 season was the worst in league history over a 28-game stretch, beating the previous mark of 2-26 set by the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1976-1977 seasons.

In taking over the Browns, Dorsey inherits a young team with more than 80 percent of its roster having less than four full seasons of NFL experience. However, Dorsey has plenty of capital to retool the team, as they have two first-round and three second-round selections in the 2018 NFL Draft, as well as more than $59 million in salary cap space available.

“I think John’s big focus is to try to get us more guys, as we move forward, on our football team that can best help us get this turned and become what we can become,” Jackson said.

“He is walking up and down these halls preaching, ‘Let’s win. Let’s get to winning as fast as we can.’ I appreciate that. He is doing everything he needs to do on his end. We have to continue to keep coaching better and get our guys to play better.”

Although Jackson and Dorsey had not worked together prior to the latter’s hiring last week, the veteran coach feels the relationship between the two is working out well.

“There are a lot of different questions we asked of each other from a football operations standpoint,” Jackson said. “Then, just from a football team standpoint, we have some injuries that we are dealing with. We spend a lot of time working through those things and really talking through them.

“He has some really good ideas on how to do things. It has been good. The back-and-forth is appreciated because I think that is what it takes to build a relationship between me and him. We are doing that each and every day.”
