AKRON, Ohio -- Variety is the spice of life, and Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine is open to changing the norm in Berea.

Since the 1992 season, the Browns have held training-camp practices at the team's Berea training facility, but the location of training camp is something Pettine and the Browns have looked at changing since he was hired as head coach at the end of January.

"I would not be opposed to it, and we've had discussions," Pettine said prior to the Akron Browns Backers Banquet Monday night. "It would be difficult in the first year to have tried to get that accomplished. I've only gone through it one time, during lockout year, with New York where we stayed home. I think there's benefits to both.

"I was always a part of a team that went away. In Baltimore, we went to Westminster. With the Jets, we went away to Cortland. In Buffalo, we went away to Rochester. You compartmentalize the year, where you're in a different setting.

"I think it means something, and it maybe requires a little bit more focus. You take them away from the comforts of home and get them away from their family a little bit and they're concentrated completely on football. It's quite an undertaking, but it's something I'm sure we'll discuss. It's something that, I think, is a possibility in the future."

In addition to changing the location of training camp, Pettine and the Browns have made inquiries into a longstanding NFL practice, the possibility of having scrimmages against or holding practices with another NFL team during training camp.

During the early stages of their return to the NFL in 1999, the Browns used to hold scrimmages with the Buffalo Bills.

"I think it's good," Pettine said. "Sometimes, you get a false sense of things. You don't know how good you are. Is one side more dominant than the other? You don't get a good feel, so anytime you can go against another NFL opponent, I think it's helpful.

"We did reach out to a couple teams, but just weren't able to make it work schedule-wise this year. We did contact the Redskins about potentially doing it. They had already committed, I believe, to do it with the Patriots. That would've made sense for us. I'd like to do it early in camp. The later on you go, I think it's more difficult, but that's something I'm certainly not opposed to."
