Czechs stop USA's run in men's hockey at 2018 Winter Olympics

The Czechs will face the winner of OAR vs. Norway on Friday.

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — The Czech Republic eliminated USA from the men’s Olympic hockey tournament with a dramatic 3-2 win in a shootout.

Petr Koukal, 32 was the only player to score for either team in the 10-player shootout. Americans Chris Bourque, Mark Arcobello, Ryan Donato, Troy Terry and Bobby Butler were stopped in the shootout.

The Czechs now play the Russians in the semifinals.

The Americans had chances to win it in regulation. Brian O’Neill rang a shot off the post with under three minutes left in regulation.

A slashing call to Vojtech Mozik gave the Americans a two-minute power play with 1:20 left in regulation.

With the Czechs ahead 2-1 and dominating offensive zone time, the Americans tied it on a shorthanded goal by Jim Slater at 10:23 of the second period.

Brian O’Neill’s long pass put Slater in alone against goalie Pavel Francouz. He snapped a shot past him from the high slot.

The Americans had led 1-0 in the first period on Ryan Donato’s fifth goal of the tournament.

But Jan Kolar’s long shot from the point beat U.S. goalie Ryan Zapolski to tie the game at 15:12.
