Go behind the scenes of Kings Island's new ride

Mystic Timbers is beginning to take root.

Kings Island's next wooden coaster is now under construction, slated to open in April 2017.

The park's 16th coaster will have more than 3,000 feet of track and will hit a top speed of 53 mph. This coaster's length will give Kings Island a new accolade: It will have the longest collective footage of wooden tracks in the world at 18,804 feet. And when it opens, Mystic Timbers will become the park's fourth wooden coaster.

Mystic Timbers is being created and constructed by Great Coasters International Inc. of Sunbury, Pennsylvania.  Adam House, design engineer, said Tuesday that construction was on schedule.

Earlier this year, a new water slide opened in the Soak City Waterpark. Cedar Point on Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio, which is owned by the same company as Kings Island, also got a new roller coaster this year.

Mystic Timbers will not be the only addition in 2017 for the 364-acre amusement and waterpark in Mason.

Kings Island also announced this year the return of the holiday-themed festival, Winterfest. Next year will also see the creation of a new Soak City amenity package and a new smokehouse restaurant.

The menu will include smoked pulled pork, smoked or grilled wings, chicken tenders and shrimp. It's the first time Kings Island's dining program will include smoked foods, Scheid said.

The waterpark also will be doubling the number of lounge chairs, enlarging deck areas and adding more fans, shade structures and changing stalls, officials said.
