Rock Hall debuts September Rock Box playlist

'Rock boxes' popping up all over downtown Cleveland

CLEVELAND - The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is celebrating its 21st birthday in September.  Factor in Cleveland hosting a successful Republican National Convention, celebrating a Cavs championship, and all the momentum and positive energy downtown, it's a great time to be a Clevelander! The Rock Hall’s recent transformations – from the addition of Rock Boxes and an updated store to seasonal stage, beer garden, and more – have been cited as reflective of this great city.

As a way of extending the love, building on that civic pride and reminding visitors that Cleveland still rocks, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame curated a September playlist with local media outlets.  WKYC's own Russ Mitchell and Sara Shookman were among those chosen to participate in creating these sounds for the city.  Sticking with a theme of celebrating Cleveland's status right here and now, this is the list of songs they contributed to the Rock Hall's playlist.

  • Pharrell Williams: “Happy”
  • Carole King: “You've Got a Friend”
  • U2: “Beautiful Day”
  • Earth, Wind & Fire: “That's The Way of The World”

The Rock Box project is a public art project of bigger-than-life speakers that capitalize on the city’s rock and roll identity and extend it throughout Downtown. These speakers are a collaboration between the Rock Hall, the City of Cleveland, LAND Studios and Cleveland-born artist Mark Reigelman. They were built to add color, promote the City’s rock and roll legacy and add music to the downtown soundscape.
