AKRON, Ohio -- Akron native Patrice Smith has been working for almost seven years to improve the lives of inner city youth. Her inspiration? The man convicted of killing her brother.

Coming up Friday, April 21 on Rising on Channel 3 News at 7 p.m., Smith and her family share how they rose from the ashes of unexpectedly losing her brother to gun violence. J'Suan Slayton, 30, was killed in April of 2010 when he unknowingly walked in on a drug deal gone bad.

After researching the background of her brother's killer, Smith and her husband started the nonprofit Unity in the Community of Akron. The organization's mission is to enhance the lives of children and families in the community by promoting educational enrichment, core family values, and youth mentorship.

WKYC's Rising series tells the story of people in Northeast Ohio who have overcome obstacles to achieve success and are inspiring others to do the same.
