Cedar Point expected to announce Soak City expansion today

Cedar Point Announcement - Ryan Haidet

UPDATE | Here's the update on what Cedar Point has officially announced regarding 2017.

SANDUSKY, Ohio -- Something’s afoot at Cedar Point.

Well, that’s what park officials are teasing.

A large faux flip-flop intended for a right foot was sent to members of the media teasing “the other half of this story” will be unveiled on Thursday, Aug. 18.

We're told to expect official confirmation on these 2017 plans by 10 a.m.

What could it be?

Speculation has swirled for months that Cedar Point will soon be expanding their Soak City water park.

Why?

Earlier this year, Cedar Point cleared a nearby swath of land by demolishing two up-charge attractions -- Challenge Racing go-karts and Skyscraper. It's a move that made plenty of fresh room for Soak City to grow.

Plus, a flip-flop tease? It most certainly looks as if the park is leading us to believe something is coming to Soak City in 2017.

Even more reason to think this is part of the plan for 2017?

An e-mail was sent to season passholders Tuesday afternoon inviting them to Soak City on Thursday -- the day of the announcement -- for a special event from 6-8 p.m. in which "full details on exciting new additions coming May of 2017." Additionally, there will be late slide time offered in the water park with free hot dogs, live entertainment and special deals on next year's season passes.

Sure does sound like a celebration for a Soak City expansion, right? After all, this would mark the first new attractions added to the water park since the Dragster H2O racing slides debuted in 2012.

But wait… Cedar Point is notorious for their tricky tease tactics in an attempt to throw off fans who are always hot on their heels. Could all this be misdirection?

Probably not.

Some are suspecting this will be connected to Cedar Point’s plans for Mean Streak, which is closing Sept. 16. But an announcement on the future of Mean Streak's footprint will likely come after the ride officially shuts down next month so Cedar Point can build more buzz. Popular belief is that Mean Streak will become a wood-steel hybrid from the Rocky Mountain Construction company, which is known for their revolutionary coaster designs like Twisted Colossus at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California.

Meanwhile, we're still waiting to learn what will soak up the space once held by the shuttered Shoot the Rapids water ride along Frontier Trail.

So what’s in store for 2017? While it definitely seems the most likely outcome of Thursday's reveal will be related to Soak City, we will know more for sure very soon.

Last month, Kings Island, a sister park of Cedar Point located near Cincinnati, dished the dirt on their 2017 plans to build a new wooden coaster known as Mystic Timbers (see animated video of the ride). The park is also making their second "major announcement" pertaining to 2017 on Thursday morning at 11 a.m.
