It's fun to sit back and watch great moments in the Winter Olympics.
For example, on Tuesday night, many of us here in the WKYC Channel 3 newsroom were huddled around televisions as we watched Shaun White capture the gold in the men's halfpipe. It was White's third career gold and the 100th in the history of the United States at the Winter Games.
I wondered what stands out most to Jim Donovan when it comes to the Winter Olympics. On Tuesday's Donovan Live Postgame Show, he mentioned the 'Miracle on Ice' 1980 U.S. Hockey team that shocked the world by winning the gold medal. I'm betting that's true for anyone who is old enough to remember that moment.
In Jimmy's case, there's a lot of history there. At the time, he was working in Minnesota, not far from where Team USA was training. He got to know head coach Herb Brooks pretty well. Previously, Jimmy had been the voice of Boston University hockey and had called the games played by future Team USA stars Jim Craig, Mike Eruzione, Dave Silk, and Jack O'Callahan.
So you can understand why that memory is the one that is most lasting.
Also on Tuesday, the Cavaliers finished up the first half of the season with an impressive win at Oklahoma City. The Wine and Gold have won four straight, including two with their new players Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance, George Hill, and Rodney Hood. It's almost a shame that the All-Star break is here because you hate to see any kind of momentum brought to a halt. Jimmy and I discuss.
