Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' hits No. 1 on iTunes

As of early Monday afternoon, Tyler's music video, published in 2009, had amassed more than 305 million views on YouTube.

Interest in Bonnie Tyler's 1983 Total Eclipse of the Heart was strongly renewed ahead of today's rare total solar eclipse.

In honor of the event, Royal Caribbean announced on Aug. 16 she would perform a rendition of the song with DNCE aboard its Total Eclipse Cruise Monday.

On Aug. 11, the song had 55,768 streams according to Nielsen's preliminary reports. A week later, on Aug. 18, that number increased 67% to 93,148 streams. Plays on Amazon and Apple were not taken into account as those figures were not yet available, but on Monday the song hit no. 1 on iTunes, ahead of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's Despacito.

Nielsen reports Apple sales of the track have risen from 310 on Aug. 11 to 2,277 on Aug. 18, an increase of approximately 635%.

As of early Monday afternoon, Tyler's music video, published in 2009, had amassed more than 305 million views on YouTube.

In a statement to USA TODAY last week, Royal Caribbean International President and CEO, Michael Bayley called Tyler "a natural choice" for the cruise setting sail from Orlando, with stops in St. Marteen, St. Thomas and the Bahamas.

“As we set sail along the eclipse’s path of totality, Oasis of the Seas will be the one place in the world where people can see DNCE and Bonnie Tyler perform her record-breaking single ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart,’" he said. "It’s hard to top a live performance by a musical legend on such a historic day.”

The song earned Tyler a Grammy nod for best pop vocal performance by a female.
