Scam Squad: Beware of fake census surveys

Be careful.

The Cuyahoga County Scam Squad is warning about a survey that claims to be an official government census survey is actually a scam.

The fake survey asks a bunch of very personal questions and then asks residents to return the survey with a $19 check. And as Sheryl Harris, the director of the Cuyahoga County Dept. of Consumer Affairs explained the scammers are after more than just the money.

“Your name and information could be sold to telemarketers and you may get more junk mail, more tailored to you based on the info you put in the survey,” said Harris.
Remember just because something claims to be official, national or comes from a Washington D.C. address book doesn’t mean it is from the government.

If you fall for this scam, you can report them to the scam squad - by calling 216-443-Scam. You can also report any suspicious mail by putting it back into the original envelope and writing on the outside “Attention: Postal inspector. Your mail carrier will take it to the postal inspector.
