Cleveland's bars prepare for St. Patrick's Day one year after tragedy

As Cleveland's bars get ready for the biggest day of the year, they are reminded of the St. Patrick's Day tragedy at a local pub one year ago.

The shaking on Shamrock Day gets started at 7:00 a.m. today for many bars in downtown Cleveland.

I'll be the 9th St. Patrick's Day at Barley House on West 6th Street, where they'll serve an estimated 5,000 patrons on Saturday alone.

High returns, but high pressure to prevent any shenanigans.

"You gotta be proactive at the door, you gotta watch for signs how people are walking how people are behaving, and you gotta watch that before you get into your establishment," says owner Corey May.

Right across the street from Barley House is a sobering reminder of what can go wrong. One year ago, an underage drinker fell from a balcony at the now-closed Spirits Restaurant and Bar.

Megan Keefe was left permanently disabled, and the bartender who served her drinks sentenced to a year's probation and community service.

After 22 years tending bar, Rebecca McLeod has seen it all. It's a tough job, where the pressures to pour mix with the liability that comes with the job.

"You gotta watch yourself. Protect your own interest," she says. "If they look under 40, you've got to card them."

Because it's not the luck of the Irish that keeps people safe.

"We put a cop at the door, 2 on the edges because people always try to jump the fence," says May. "We know what to expect."
