Historic 'Moses Cleaveland' tree cut down after 250+ years

Saying goodbye to a Northeast Ohio landmark.

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- After standing for more than 250 years, one of Ohio's oldest trees was cut down today.

The Summit Avenue landmark is known as a "Moses Cleaveland" tree because "it was considered an adult white oak back in 1796 when Moses Cleaveland landed on the Cuyahoga River," according to its owner, David Norton.

It is being cut down because the tree's trunk has rotted over the years and is no longer safe, and the city doesn’t want to see anyone get hurt in the high traffic area.
