Portion of I-271 renamed after fallen fire fighter, Mike Palumbo

Michael Palumbo was a dedicated Beachwood Fire Fighter that lost his battle with occupational brain cancer in 2017.

Beachwood — A portion of Interstate 271 has been renamed in honor of fallen fighter Mike Palumbo.

Born in Cleveland, Michael Palumbo was a dedicated Beachwood Fire Fighter that lost his battle with occupational brain cancer in 2017.

He was captain, SWAT medic, part of the hazmat team and a member of the honor guard.

To further honor Palumbo, his sacrifices and leadership Senate Bill 161 was passed allowing the portion of Interstate 27 between mile markers 28 and 32 to be renamed in his honor.

A commemorative marker was presented by Beachwood Mayor Martin Horwitz and State Senator, SB 161 supporter, Kenny Yuko to the Palumbo family in a private ceremony Monday morning.

“This is a fitting tribute to Michael,” commented Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters President Mike Taylor. “Along with the legislation that bears his name, his legacy will be remembered for generations of fire fighters.”

Because of Palumbo, Ohio legislators adopted the ' Michael Louis Palumbo Jr. Act" that provides workers' compensation benefits to fire fighters battling occupational cancer.

Palumbo is survived by his wife and five children.
