It's something that doesn't happen often in Northeast Ohio, but it is certainly a sight to behold when it does.
The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo says several white "Snowy Owls" have been spotted in the area, including 10 on the breakwall near downtown Cleveland. Other sightings have been reported at Edgewater Park, the E 55th St. Marina, and Gordon Park.
The zoo says such a large movement of these types of owls in this part of the country is rare, and most likely came from a successful arctic nesting season.
And for you Hogwarts fans, we're still not not sure if one of the creatures is in fact Harry Potter's trusted friend Hedwig
.
Meanwhile, WKYC's Carl Bachtel journeyed to the Medina Raptor Center in Spencer, where there's a new bird at the sanctuary who is getting a lot of attention.
It's an injured snowy owl, a victim of a dislocated wing.
This flock of snowy owls across are area is something the experts call an "irruption." That's with an I, not an E. Abundant food on the tundra means more baby owls. Then, they grow up.
"They are territorial, so at some point they will start to chase away their kids, as we all should," says Laura Jordan of the Medina Raptor Center with a laugh.
The center has another special resident, Ella. Injury kept her from being released back to the wild, but from her beautiful eyes to feather covered feet, she's a star.
"When we do a program, people want the owls. All the birds are cool, but owls are special," Jordan adds.
