Perry High School officials say candy that made kids sick was not tampered with

"The well-being of our students is our top priority," Superintendent Scott A. Beatty said.

Officials say the candy that made 21 students sick at Perry High School Wednesday was not tampered with, according to early indications.

In a written statement, Perry Local Schools Superintendent Scott A. Beatty said he and others in the district "do not believe there is any additional cause for concern," although they are still awaiting for the officials results to come back.

How the candy caused the kids to become sick—with symptoms including increased heart rates and dilated pupils—remains unclear. Six of the children were taken to local hospitals.

"The well-being of our students is our top priority," Beatty said. "We take all situations that may impact their safety and health very seriously."

According to police, preliminary tests show the confiscated candy was not laced with drugs.

Police took and tested baggies of sour patch kids, which were sorted by color. However, they said one color was missing and could not be tested because it had all been eaten or thrown out.

Police are now interviewing the students involved.
