PERRY TOWNSHIP -- Police announced the arrest of a Stark County Perry High School student for causing a panic by telling classmates they consumed tainted candy earlier this week.
The incident happened Wednesday, when several students reported feeling ill after eating Sour Patch Kids brought to school by a classmate. Six students were hospitalized and 21 reported feeling sick. The students claimed to have increased heart rates and dilated pupils.
Police say a male student brought the candy to school will no ill intent. After he shared the candy, a female student began telling classmates the candy was laced, causing anxiety and panic.
The Stark County Crime Lab tested the candy and found it hadn't been the subject of any tampering. Police later found the female student who started the rumors had the remainder of the candy.
The female student is charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing official business.
