WATCH | LifeAct's mission: Prevent teen suicide

LifeAct was featured on Friday's We The People show at noon about a troubling topic in the news: Teen suicide.

CLEVELAND — Representatives from the LifeAct organization were featured on Friday’s We The People show at noon on WKYC-TV about a troubling topic in the news: Teen suicide.

Suicide is the leading cause of death among youth and teens, after accidents, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Our guests were Jack Binder, LifeAct chief executive officer, and Board Member Loree Vick.

They discussed LifeAct’s mission: to prevent youth and teen suicide through education, and explain where to go for help.

LifeAct’s programming teaches students that they are the first line of defense.

Since 2000, they have taught suicide prevention to more than 225,000 middle and high school students.

Last year alone, they presented their program to 25,000 students in 189 schools, free of charge. During these programs, more than 2,000 came forward asking for help for themselves, family or friends.

To help fund this education, the 14th Annual Into the Light Walk will be held starting at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 22 at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Directions

According to LifeAct, this nighttime walk is a “motivational journey that culminates through a pathway filled with personalized luminarias. People who attend this walk are forever changed.”

John Trautwein, founder of The Will to Live Foundation, will be the keynote speaker. John lost his 15-year-old son to suicide and has used this pain to help prevent others from suffering a similar loss.
