1 killed in crash on Cleveland's east side

The victim died at the hospital.

CLEVELAND -- Police say a 20-year-old man is dead after being hit by a car on Cleveland's east side Tuesday morning.

According to officials, the man was crossing East 79th St. around 7:30 a.m. when a Ford box truck heading east went off the south side of the road and struck multiple poles and signs before colliding with the victim. The crash apparently sheared off the right wall of the box truck and caused two motorcycles it had been hauling to fall on top of the man in the street.

The victim was taken to University Hospitals, where he succumbed to his injuries. He has not yet been identified.

The driver of the truck—51-year-old Michael Thomas of Ashtabula—initially ran away from the scene before surrendering to police. Authorities say he failed to control his vehicle on the icy roads.

The facts of the case are being presented to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office. No charges have been filed at this time.
