Garfield Heights basketball player Alonzo Gaffney commits to Ohio State

He had offers from eight other schools, including Kansas, Michigan State, and Louisville.

One of the best young basketball players Northeast Ohio will continue his career in his home state, as Garfield Heights junior Alonzo Gaffney announced his verbal commitment to Ohio State Tuesday.

Gaffney is rated as a five-star prospect and the No. 1 boys basketball recruit in the state of Ohio for the class of 2019, according to 247Sports. The 6-foot-9 power forward cited OSU's strong 2017-18 campaign under first-year head coach Chris Holtmann as a reason for his decision, as well as the obvious lure of growing up in Buckeye country.

"It was, like, 'I'm from Ohio. Why not go to Ohio State?'," Gaffney told WKYC's Pat Chiesa. Towards the end of the [recruiting] process, that's where I knew I wanted to go."

Gaffney will still have one more year in Garfield Heights before making the trek down to Columbus. This past season, he helped power the Bulldogs to an 18-5 record and a trip to the district finals.

"You have a kid who's..., first and foremost, a great kid with high character," head coach Sonny Johnson said, "that has the talent that he has, that has the potential that he has, there's no telling how good he could be."

Gaffney had offers from eight other schools, including Kansas, Michigan State, and Louisville. He is Ohio State's first commitment from the 2019 class.
