Archbishop Hoban wins D-II state football championship

Freshman quarterback Shane Hamm led the way, throwing for 4 touchdowns of at least 21 yards each.

For the third straight year, the Archbishop Hoban Knights of Akron can call themselves state champions.

Hoban (14-1) took down Winton Woods (13-2) 42-14 Thursday night in Canton to win Ohio's Division II state football title. Like most of their contests in 2017, this game was never really in doubt, as the Knights raced out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back.

Freshman quarterback Shane Hamm led the way, throwing for 4 touchdowns of at least 21 yards each. The longest came on the very first play of the game: a 73-yard strike to Garrett Houser.

The Warriors actually had a strong rushing attack, but struggled in the passing game, as Kenny Mayberry threw for just 71 yards and 2 interceptions.

With a state title in Division II, Hoban managed to repeat the magic of the previous two seasons, when they won it all in Division III.
