Kirtland falls to Marion Local 34-11 in D-VI state football championship game

Flyers receiver Nathan Tangeman caught 6 passes for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead his team to its 10th state title.

Another fantastic season for the Kirtland football program ended with a thud Saturday, as the Hornets fell to the Marion Local Flyers 34-11 in the Division VI state championship game.

The game was never really in doubt from the second quarter onward, as Flyers receiver Nathan Tangeman caught 6 passes for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead his team to its 10th state title. Alex Partington, Jack Buening, and Nolan Habodasz each added scores on the ground.

The Marion Local (15-0) defense also held the high-powered Kirtland (14-1) offense (which had been averaging 42 points per game) without a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter, when Dylan Fulco hit Joey Torok for a 6-yard TD with 2:29 left. The Hornets only turned the ball over once, but were out-gained 327-192.

With the loss, Kirtland is now 3-3 all-time in state championship games.
