Former East Tech, Chagrin Falls football coach Gerry Stueber passes away at 66

In 21 years at East Tech, Stueber won three League Championships, the 1997 City Championship and made four appearances in the City Championship Game.

Gerry Stueber, who served as the head football coach at East Tech High School for 21 years and was named the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Coach of the Year and Ohio's Division I Coach of the Year in 1997, passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 66.

A 1969 graduate of Bay Village High School and a 1973 graduate of Michigan State University, Stueber spent more than 45 years as an educator and coach. He was most recently a staff member of Chagrin Falls Schools, where he served as the head freshman coach at Chagrin Falls High School.

In a release, Chagrin Falls Schools described Stueber as "a beloved husband, father, teacher, coach, and friend to all in our community. He poured his heart and soul into teaching and coaching and we know he had an impact on each and every student and player he encountered at the high school."

Chagrin Falls AD Charlie Barch took to Twitter to share his condolences.

On the gridiron, Stueber is best-remembered for his 35-year stint -- 21 of which were spent as the head coach -- at East Tech High School, where he won three League Championships, the 1997 City Championship and made four appearances in the City Championship Game. A three-time Senate Athletic League Coach of the Year, he was presented with the Golden Deeds Awards from the Greater Cleveland Football Coaches Association in 2005.

“I have given my all to the players and coaches whom I have loved and served," Stueber said in his retirement speech in 2006. "It has been a joy to coach some wonderful and deserving young people.”
