Popularity of Fortnite video game continues to soar

It's wildly popular for kids, but what may surprise you is moms like it too.

It was the hot video game of the holiday season and chances are good your child is playing it.

It's called Fortnite and players try to survive by battling zombies and accomplishing various missions. It's wildly popular for kids, but what may surprise you is moms like it too.

The mission is simple: Save the world and survive.

Jenn Vranic is definitely cool with her son Conner playing it. "It's very age-appropriate for our 7th graders," she says.

And a lot of those 7th graders are playing it.

"What I do like about it is he's constantly online playing with friends from school, so that part I like," Jenn adds. "Because we can manage, we can see their name and the players that he's playing against."

"There can be a hundred people in a server and that's how many people you play against," says Conner. "Just random people."

But some of those random people may have ulterior motives.

"My son gave him his phone number and minutes later our credit card or through Verizon, a charge was made. And we don't know what that charge is," Jenn warns.

Jenn adds to make sure you check the names playing with your son or individual and make sure they are people you know.

Moms like the fact that they know where their kids are and what they're doing. They also know how long they're playing.

"We get a weekly report from XBox/Microsoft," says Jenn. "This past week, he (Conner) played 19 hours and 26 minutes on Fortnite, and this is after-school and weekends."

Earlier this month the game reached a record 3.4 million concurrent players, but the vast amount of players caused some servers to crash.

Meanwhile, the newest version of the game just went live.
