Possible U: Job fair to help build pipelines

VALLEY VIEW - This week we've been exploring hundreds of jobs available in the construction industry, building pipelines across the country. A job fair to fill those slots is being held right here in Northeast Ohio.

While the location and purpose of pipeline projects have sparked controversy, you can't debate that the projects bring new jobs.

And there simply aren't enough people to fill them.

"We have 1300 jobs available, Teamsters Training Director Michael LaBorde tells WKYC Channel 3. "We don't have enough membership to man all these projects. So we're expanding our workforce."

At the Teamsters Union Hall in Valley View, dozens have already showed interest in joining the pipeline workforce.

"Construction experience is helpful, but we will help train you to get ready for the job before we send you to the field," says LaBorde. "We don't believe in setting anybody up for failure."

Here's what you'll need if you are interested:

  • A commercial driver's license
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Willing to travel (it is a must)
  • You have to pass a drug test

If hired, you'll get a job that pays $30 per hour and includes family health insurance and a pension. The current project lasts 6-8 months, followed by other projects to keep people employed for a longer term.

"The more training you do, the more valuable you are to the contractor and to the local union," explains LaBorde. "We can keep you employed more."

The Teamsters Job Fair continues on Saturday at the Local 436 Union Hall in Valley View from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
