CLEVELAND -- President Obama met a four-legged member of the Navy SEAL team that took down Osama bin Laden.

Cairo, a specially trained military dog, was used to help alert the special forces to any hidden threats.

Military working dogs are trained in much the same way police and homeland security canines are schooled.

Paul Shaughnessy should know. He's trained 75 dogs. Many of them are working right here in Northeast Ohio.

The preferred breeds are German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah). Their sense of smell is 250 times that of a human. They have strong hunt and retrieve drives. They're tough and intimidating.

As more information about the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound is released, we learn the heroic SEAL team that took down the terrorist had with them a military working dog.

"It makes me feel really proud of that and being a part of it, maybe on a smaller scale" Shaughnessy said.

Paul says the dog was likely used to sniff out explosives, search underground tunnels or find the enemy.

These animals are lifesavers in such raids.
