BAY VILLAGE - Two baby hawks rescued from a tree that fell in Monday night's storm are being cared for at a local nature center.
Troy and Marci Anderson, a Berea couple who located the fallen birds, took them to the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center Tuesday morning.
Scientists there took the birds to a veterinarian.
The birds suffered fractured legs after their nest came crashing to the ground.
Strong winds blew down several trees that stood over 100 feet tall in the backyards of homeowners on Karen Drive.
The Andersons had watched the family of hawks in the high branches for two years.
When the storm calmed, the couple could see one of the adult hawks circling the area where the trees containing the nest had fallen.
Troy and Marci hurried down the hill and began listening for the sound of the baby birds.
They found two of them among a tangle of leaves and branches.
The Andersons kept the birds warm and dry Monday night, and dropped them off at the center the next morning.
The Lake Erie Nature and Science Center takes in around 1,000 injured animals every year.
The center has been performing wildlife rehabilitation at no charge to the public since its inception in 1945.
Scientists there think they'll be able to rehabilitate the injured hawks, though it will be a lengthy and expensive process.
