  • WESTLAKE -- Does your company have slides, in-house dry cleaning, a diner and a barber shop? One Westlake company takes care of its employees this way.

Hyland Software transformed its parking lot into a go-cart race track and picnic spot for its 1,200 employees, Thursday.

The celebration was in honor of the company reaching its 10,000th customer.

Since 1991, Hyland Software has been in the business of making computer software that helps businesses run more efficiently.

Their main customers are banks, hospitals and insurance companies.

Ryan Tegeder started as a marketing writer two months ago, after graduating from West Virginia University.  The Avon Lake native interned at Hyland before he was hired.

"Working here made me want to work at a company like this," Tegeder said.

Human Resources Manager Sarah Coakley says Hyland puts a lot of emphasis on helping employees with the work-life balance.

The Westlake campus is modern in design, with glass walls and open desks.

Fun elements include slides, ping-pong tables and a diner on site.

The building also offers employees services like daycare, dry cleaning, a barber shop and car washes.

"It really does allow employees to feel valued, and shows that the managers and executives really care," Coakley said.

It's a unique environment that's proved successful - in the software industry, turnover averages 22 percent.

Hyland's turnover rate is less than ten percent.

In 2009 to 2010, the company raised revenues over 24 percent, at a time when others were cutting back.

Tegeder says his work environment is the reason he chose to come back to Northeast Ohio after college.

"[Hyland shows] you don't need to out-source jobs. You don't need to bring people in from out of town. There are people here to get it done, and [Hyland] takes advantage of that," Tegeder said.

Hyland Software has made the NorthCoast 99 list the last six years in a row.  The award recognizes the best companies to work for in Northeast Ohio.

As far as potential employees go, Coakley says smart, driven, over-achievers are the type of people who do well at the company.
