The music business in Cleveland is a "huge" economic driver worth hundreds of millions of dollars. A new study done for the "community Partnership for Arts and Culture" says the music scene in Cleveland is big, big business. The "Remix Cleveland" study, conducted by the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University, concludes that just last year, more than 62-hundred people made their living in the music sector working as musicians, instrument makers, or recording studios, among others.
The paycheck for the music sector last year? Nearly $275 million.
And when you factor in the cost of instruments and supplies the music sector buys, and the manufacturing jobs needed to make those goods and services, the music biz in Cleveland cranked out nearly $840 million in output last year.
If you're not a music fan, how does this help you? People in the music business paid more that $91 million in taxes in 2010 that help bankroll community safety forces and schools.
The study is the first to really put dollars and cents on the impact of music on our economy. The numbers are impressive, but how do we grow the business sector?
"Remix Cleveland" suggests that we've got to keep musicians from leaving the area, create more places for music to happen, and sell Cleveland as an affordable place to live with world-class music education programs and a thriving arts scene.
