EASTLAKE -- One man is dead and another hurt after a confrontation at an Eastlake residence.

About 7 p.m. Wednesday, police were called to a Vine Street apartment for a report of a man with a gun.

Police found Denise Ward, 49, physically restraining the suspected gunman, Howard E. Tichenor, 65, of Eastlake. James W. Lyttel Jr., 42, was sitting on the ground with injuries to his head.

Police found out that Ward and Lyttle were in his apartment when the woman's former boyfriend, Tichenor, arrived and started banging on the door.

Both Ward and Lyttle opened the door and Tichenor pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Lyttle.

There was a struggle and Lyttle's head was struck. That's when Ward knocked Tichenor to the floor and forcibly held him down until police arrived.

Police said the gun was never discharged. Tichenor was taken to Lake West Hospital where he died. Eastlake police Lt. Bill Gutowski said Tichenor's body is now at the Lake County Coroner's office.

Gutowski said the coroner will determine the cause of death, either by being restrained or another medical reason.

The police investigation continues.
