GREEN, Ohio -- The Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) announced it expects to break its all-time annual passenger record Wednesday.
The airport is set to break last year's record of 1.560 million passengers by reaching an expected 1.564 million today.
During 2011, CAK broke monthly passenger records for 9 out of eleven months so far -- including a record November travel season. More than 143,000 passengers flew out of CAK in November.
Akron-Canton Airport has been on a steady rise. Its passenger numbers have doubled in the last decade.
To celebrate the milestone, the airport will offer free activities and food, including a photo booth and freshly-baked cookies.
The airport is in the midst of a 10-year, $110 million upgrade project that kicked off in 2008.
The first passenger flights out of Akron-Canton Airport started in 1948.
