From the moment TJ Lane walked into the school at 7:30 Monday morning, it was only a matter of minutes before we first got word of the shooting. The first 9-1-1 call was made at 7-38 a.m., and police responded immediately.

At 7:51, the mother of a student shares with Channel 3 News the text her son sent. He had taken cover in the school, but was OK.

The official lockdown of Chardon High happens no later than 7:57 a.m., and a mere three minutes later, helicopters are landing in the lot of the nearby K-Mart.

At 8:02, the Mom shares a second text from her son. He and those with him are safe, locked in the school. The police have acted quickly and 12 minutes after 8 a.m. they have caputred TJ Lane, not far from the school. He offered them no resistance.

Everyone would have to wait until 8:34 to learn the sickening news that several students had been shot, the exact number not yet known.

We reported at 8:39 that a second possible gunman had been detained, but later information pointed only to Lane as being responsible.

At 8:50 with the gunman in custody, the middle and elementary school students are released, and the superintendent confirms seven minutes later (8:57) that there was only one gunman, and that the high school would be evacuated.

The sad news that one boy had died and that four others were in the hospital, was made at noon in a live news conference, and Chardon prepared itself for what else was to come.

On Tuesday morning (Feb. 28) the Medical Examiner confirmed the death of a second student.
