LaGRANGE -- Authorities arrested a man who attempted to make a chemical explosive while at work, when the concoction exploded in front of him.
Elyria Police is handling the investigation because the explosion happened at Diamond Products, which is in their jusidiction.
At a Saturday press conference, police said Robert Shaw, 50, of LaGrange, was in a room by himself when the explosion happened around 8:30 a.m. Friday.
Shaw was burned on the face, arms, and hands in the explosion. He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where he was treated and released.
Upon his release, he was taken into custody for Aggravated Arson.
A subsequent raid by ATF, the Lorain County Bomb Squad and other law enforcement agencies turned up more chemicals in Shaw's home. The house was later deemed "unsafe."
The surrounding area was checked but nothing was found.
Shaw is expected to be officially charged on Monday.
